10 Important Facts about Union uniforms in the Civil War


  1. The main color of the Union was Navy blue.
  2. The uniform identified Union from Confederate.
  3. Union uniforms were largely influenced by French military regalia.
  4. There were many different kinds of people who joined the Union army. 
  5. Main uniform was Navy blue, a frock coat, pants, black boots, some kind of weapon,and depending on rank, various patches and pins. 
  6. "79th New York (Highlanders)" were a volunteer infantry from New York who had Irish ancestors that wore tartan kilts (man skirts) until 1963 when the kilt was resigned to formal wear.
  7. "Duryee Zouaves" wore bright colors and modeled themselves after French Colonial services.
  8. "Garibaldi Guard" wore feathered caps with "GG" embroidered in gold. 
  9. 1963 was when the most common styling of the Union uniform was made more mandatory. 
  10. Men and Women today are helped a lot by the idea that browns and greens can be used to blend in for tactical purposes.

  2. Number six.... the Highlanders had Irish ancestors... Pull out a map and try to figure out what is wrong with that statement.
