General Lee to General Longstreet
Though General Robert E. Lee was part of the Confederate army, he had been part of the Union for a small time before he decided to switch sides. This quote means it's a good thing war sucks, because otherwise people would just keep fighting. It's human nature to fight for survival, but humans have other emotions to control the more animal emotions. Since people have a need to advance in society, they know war won't actually help, but it seems to for a time before the repercussions really start showing up.
